Washington Summer in Alexandria
06.02.2009
-17 °C
I am in Alexandria now on the Mediterrean coast.
The Mediterrean is beautiful and the weather is great, like one of the rare sunny days we get during the summer. I saw my first clouds since landing in Egypt and it felt a little like home. Today we toured Alexandria, established by Alexander the Great back in 330 B.C. This is where the Egypt of the 21th century is located. First we toured the Bibliotheque Alexandria, a HUGE library. The library is the 2nd largest in the world in terms of the number of books (library of congress is larger), but it has a bigger reading room.
We also visited some Roman era catacombs, a roman ampitheater and the Montazah gardens where one of the old royal palaces is located.
So what did we do before now? I think I left off that we were on the ships visiting Lake Nasser. At Aswan, we switched to another boat, the H/S Radamis II and visited the High Dam at Aswan. We saw the temple of Isis and on the way to the boat to take us to the island, we were swarmed by "cousins", but fortunately found our way thanks to our guide shouting out "Huskies!, Huskies!".
Well argh, I just spent an hour typing, but didn't save, so lost half of what I wrote! Please excuse my spelling and grammer due to this computer, plus the spacebar is not working well.
Well we spent 3 days in Luxor touring the Valley of the Kings and Queens, Hapsetsut's Temple, the Luxor museum, Karnak temple and Luxor temple. It was exciting to see Luxor temple since it originally had two obelisks and one was given to the French and now resides on the Place de la Concorde, which I saw in 2000 on my visit to Paris. After those 3 days I was exhausted from walking and the heat (which was hotter than Cairo).
I am going to add some more pictures now.
